EFT, Emotional Freedom Techniques, also known as Tapping (or Meridian Tapping), is a form of energetic emotional healing that involves using the fingertips to tap on key acupressure points while talking about whatever is bothering you. EFT is simple to use, even for kids, and is highly effective. By balancing the body’s energy systems, EFT has helped millions of people when traditional therapy methods could not.
How EFT Works
Our bodies have an intricate meridian system that moves energy through the body. The ancient Chinese art of acupuncture is based on this meridian system. When we experience stress, whether physical or emotional, our amygdala is triggered, the fight or flight response cascade is activated, flooding our systems with stress hormones. This stress disrupts the meridian system. Those disturbances remain in the body and result in symptoms such as emotional stress and physical pain.
Tuning into the problem and talking about it while tapping the acupoints in the meridians clears the blockages and restores the natural free flow of energy. In addition to clearing energetic blockages, tapping on the meridians sends a strong signal to your nervous system that stops the fight or flight response, lowers cortisol (the stress hormone), and alleviates stress and anxiety. EFT tells your mind and body that all is well, you’re safe, and there’s no need to be bothered by that particular event/worry/issue anymore. Restoring balance in the energy system even improves the body’s innate self-healing abilities.
Modern science is able to show proof of how EFT positively affects the brain by using computerized EEG imaging. Clinical studies have shown that EFT is over 90% effective and works much faster than traditional therapy.
Is Tapping Difficult?
Tapping is easy! Anyone can learn tapping, even children. You simply use the tips of the index and middle fingers to tap quickly 5 – 7 times on each of the points. You want to tap firmly enough to stimulate the meridian, but not hard enough to hurt. Many of the points are bilateral. You can tap along one side of the body, alternate sides, or tap both at once – all approaches work. My personal preference is to tap both sides with the bilateral face and collarbone points.
Admittedly, talking and tapping on your body can look strange. Even more strange-looking are the advanced techniques combining tapping on a special acupoint on the hand while moving the eyes and humming and counting. But EFT so rapidly neutralizes distressing memories, traumas, stress, fears, and pain that people quickly shed any thoughts of looking strange and enthusiastically embrace tapping!
